Recap of Week 1

Hola peeps,

I've been slacking this past week on my blog posts but no biggie, work just kind of took for me towards the end of the week. That brought a lot of stress and a lot of accomplishment as well. From Wednesday June 1st- Friday June 3rd, I worked on multiple stories that found their way on to the Kitsap Sun website as well as print. My first major story involved an event for a local non-profit organization called Feed Kitsap. The event was for local junior high and high school students to raise nonperishable items for those in need. While reporting on the story I was thrown in the mix of on site video where I got to record the event entitled, Yuck Fight Against Hunger. Basically, hundreds of students got the chance to throw a wacky substance called "Yuck" at each other and play in the mud. It was a really great experience and I got the chance to meet with some interesting people and good hearted kids. I then had to edit the video for the website, something I've never had any experience with so it was pretty cool getting to know the Final Cut Program. It got even sweeter as the video and story went on both the website and print the next day. I was pretty stoked to see that for my first big story. My next assignments included covering a commemoration at the local navy base for the Battle of Midway. The battle took place in 1942 during WWII, which made for a pretty interesting story after interview a few of the veterans present at the commemoration. Maynard "Rocky" Hoffman, was the only one who was actually involved during the battle which was pretty insane. It was awesome getting to interview him along with some of the captains of the base and other veterans. That story brought a pretty big reward even though I stressed out throughout the day, knowing that it was a potential front page story. Luckily, I was able to sit down with the main editor and go over my content. It was very insightful and wasn't as bad as I'd thought it would be. Sure enough the story was on the front page of Saturday's paper making it my first ever front page story. Say what?!?! It was a hard story but a great learning experience. Finally to round out the week I covered a feature story on a couple who will be traveling to the Galapagos Islands for an adventure centered around communication. That was by far one of the coolest stories I've covered (right up there with the Bart Crow Band). I was really surprised when I came into work this morning and one of the reporters congratulated me on the communication story. I was bewildered because I didn't know that story had made it into the paper yet. When I grabbed a copy I was pleased to see that this story was also on the front page. WOW. Two in my first week, talk about stoked! Hopefully all the stress and low confidence I've had so far will begin to subside, allowing me to excel even more and get into a rhythm of fun. That's all for now. Stay tuned for  more updates.

Your Boy,

Allen Hoye
